Special Service Items on Your Move

When it comes to moving appliances or special belongings, there are quite a few things to take into consideration. Like Meatloaf famously sang “I would do anything for love, but I won’t do that”, there are endeavors our movers can’t provide based on liability, no matter how much we would love to help. In these cases, you have two options. Allow us to contact a third-party service provider to service your items, or you can service them yourself. Below, are some details on some typical specialty items, making it easier for you to determine which solution is right for you.

Moving Appliances

Moving your appliances is not a issue for us. At the same time, the disconnection and reconnection procedure call for expertise beyond what moving companies can offer. The following are some guidelines to the most frequently moved appliances:

  • Refrigerators– Given it is attached to a water line, that line will need to be disconnected. When moving your refrigerator, be sure to disconnect it at least 48 hours in advance. You’ll want to keep the doors open, and put a towel on the floor. This will absorb the water as your appliance defrost. Keep an eye on it and change, as needed, depending on how much moisture it absorbs (plus avoid any possible water damage to the floor!)
  • Top Load Washers- Fortunately, top load washers are crystal clear. All that’s necessary is to disconnect the water.
  • Front Load Washers– Front load washing machines call for extra attention when moving them. Being the drum is suspended inside, a stabilizer kit is needed to hold it in place. Moving a front load washing machine without using a stabilizer kit is certain to ruin your washer. Fortunately, these kits are typically inexpensive, easy to order and easily installed.
    • I already have the stabilizer kit– These are also called “shipping bolts”. It’s possible that when your appliance was delivered, the company left these bolts behind. If this is the case, a quick online search of your exact model washer will provide details on how to install the bolts.
    • I need a kit– An online store such as repairclinic.com offers most kits. Simply type in the make and model of your washer, and order the kit needed for your exact model. Most kits range from $30-$60.
    • You should be able to contact the company where you purchased your washing machine. It is not uncommon for the installers and delivery crew to set up a washer, remove the stabilizer and take them with them. Many companies will advise how to obtain a new kit for your specific model.

Clothes Dryers- Given you have an electric dryer, all you need to do is unplug it! Gas dryers, however, require additional attention. The gas line to the residence will need to be disconnected and capped. If working with gas, it’s important to really consider your personal skill level and whether this is a task you’re confident you can complete on your own.

Specialty Beds

While disassembly and reassembly of standard beds is part of the services you can expect from Corrigan, specialty beds are generally beyond the capabilities of what moving companies can offer. Aside from moving appliances, specialty beds are the next most common items that need special servicing. Below are some of the most common specialty beds and how to service them.

Cribs– Due to ever-changing liability with baby products, moving companies cannot disassemble or reassemble cribs. If you prefer to disassemble your crib on your own, below are a few tips:

  • Having the same person who assembled the crib disassemble it, this is ideal. Being that they already have the experience of putting the crib together, taking it apart should be much easier!
  • The crib does not need to be completely taken apart. Disassembling into sections small enough to fit through the doorway is all that’s needed.
  • Photograph the crib before it’s disassembled, and close-ups of the crib throughout the job. That way, you will easily recall where everything goes along with the location of screws when reassembling it.
  • Remember to keep and label all parts and screws. Placing items in a zippered bag and packing them where you will remember is important.

Bunk Beds– Also due to liability, Corrigan is unable to disassemble bunk beds. Depending on the complexity of your bed, you may be inclined to take this on yourself. The initial step would be to do a website search for the exact make/model of the bunk bed to see if there’s a video showing the disassembly steps.

Memory Foam Mattresses– Memory foam, or the more popular “bed in a box”, need to be boxed and transported laying flat. Your move representative will most likely to ask you if your bed is a memory foam or spring mattress. Memory foam mattresses don’t require special services, at the same time we do place them in a box verses a mattress bag. This enables the mattress to keep its shape during the relocation.

Sleep Number Mattress– Sleep number beds require service prior to the move. While some of these beds simply require unplugging and letting the air chambers deflate, others demand more involved service. Sleep Number provides this resource to help guide you based on the model of your bed.

Home Gym Equipment

Treadmills– Providing your treadmill can fold, then we will likely be able to move it while folded without any disassembly. However, if your treadmill is located in the basement or needs moved up or down a staircase, consider the width of your stairwell. If there is a turn in the stairs or it’s too narrow, your treadmill will need disassembled to move. You should also, take into consideration where the equipment is going in your new home. It may go up the stairs at your current home, but maybe not at the new home. Be certain to measure both sets of stairs ahead of moving.

Elliptical Machines- Due to the large arms and awkward weight distribution, practically all ellipticals must be disassembled. Sometimes, removing the arms is acceptable to make the unit moveable. Doing a quick web search of your product should provide instruction on how to remove the arms.

Pelotons- We have witnessed a large increase in Peloton and video screen stationary cycles over the past two years. The display screens and various mechanisms must to be removed and properly packed in order to securely move the bike. It’s smart to check with Peloton to ensure disassembling it does not affect the warranty. If this is the case, request recommendations or if they provide this service.

Additional Items

Grandfather clocks– The pendulum and weights need to be removed and attentively packed prior to moving the clock. Wearing gloves is a must when handling the weights; the most insignificant fingerprint may throw off the timing.

Wall Mounted TVs– Movers do not remove objects screwed to the walls. The most typical wall mounted item is the TV. When removed, Corrigan will pack the TV or you can pack it back in the original box. Television boxes are also available for purchase to ensure the right protection when moving.

Corrigan will do anything for our customers, even that!

Do not hesitate if you have to move appliances or specialty items as part of your household goods move. Corrigan will certainly arrange any necessary third-party services for you; we partner with local and nationwide providers that specialize in this type of service. We can also include the cost of these services into your quote from Corrigan, eliminating the need to pay another company (although you may choose to provide payment directly to the third-party company, if you prefer.) Corrigan consistently has our customer’s best interest at heart. There may be services moving companies can’t provide, but when it comes to our customers – we’ll do anything for you!

*Corrigan recommends consulting with your product’s manufacture before tackling disassemble or reassemble any household goods or specialty items yourself. Failure to service items accurately for transporting will result in damage and product failure.
